Ando

The brief asked for an object that served both everyday life and emergency preparedness. But the home you live in day to day and the situation you'd face in a crisis are very different, and a product built for one tends to serve the other poorly. So rather than split the difference, I prioritised the everyday, holding that no feature should exist only for a crisis.

The reasoning is simple: we keep the objects we actually use charged, accessible, and familiar. A preparedness tool buried in a drawer with dead batteries helps no one.

Ando starts from the archetypal table lamp—a conical shade on a stem—and deconstructs it. The shade is lifted and tilted back, and the light source is moved from inside the shade down into the stem, glowing upward for soft, indirect light. A forward-leaning spine connects shade and base with stark transitions.

That same shift lets the stem lift out and work on its own as a flashlight. Set back down, it aligns magnetically onto the charging pins in the base. The tool is always charged, and always where you expect it.
