The only specification for this project was to create a wooden seating piece within the dimensions of 50x50x50 cm. I chose to draw inspiration from the crude yet charming homemade furniture that surrounded me during time spent at my family’s summer pasture in Valdres in my childhood. This type of furniture was common in rural Norway in the early 1900s.

These pieces served as the starting point for my design process, where I examined their common elements and features, re-imagining them in a contemporary context with more refined manufacturing methods.

The limited resources and use-what-you-have mentality that shaped the original pieces also influenced my design, where I focused on high material utilization and flat-packability to meet the sustainability demands of today’s world.
